The Heart’s Two Parts
Your heart has two parts that help it pump blood and keep you alive…the plumbing part and the electrical part. When the pipes (arteries) of the heart are plugged a device called a stent or bypass surgery may fix blood flow and take care of the chest pain you feel. CPR helps “pump” blood when someone’s heart stops. But the heart also has an electrical system that helps the heart move and thus move blood. During cardiac arrest the heart’s electrical system fails and needs electrically “reset”. So how do you help someone’s failing electrical system?
What’s AED Mean?
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a device that “looks” at the heart’s electrical system, the victim of sudden cardiac arrest and is capable of delivering an electrical charge to the heart if needed. The AED is really meant to be used by people who have no medical training…perhaps you?
Death By Numbers
In this country, 4000 people experience Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) each week…they die. SCA is a life-threatening condition where the heart, instead of pumping blood as it normally does, quivers ineffectively with no circulation.
The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that the survival rate for SCA is less than 20% with CPR alone. When an early defibrillation program provides immediate CPR and delivers the first shock from an AED within the first three minutes, survival rates are as high as 74%. AEDs give the victim a 54% better chance to survive…now that’s worth investing in!
