Freedom From Smoking® Session Outline

Session 1: Thinking About Quitting

In this session the group is introduced to each other and it conducts a group assessment.  Such assessments as "Are You Ready to Quit Smoking?" and "Preparing to Quit" are completed.  Beginning the decision process is hard and the LHS facilitator will work to address the pros and cons of quitting.

Session 2: On the Road to Freedom Session

Using the supportive group setting found in this program, this session promotes the use of the group of helping each participant quit.  Discussion centers on self-management skills and general health benefits of quitting. Other activities include exploring stress management, presenting a relaxation exercise, and assessing nicotine dependence.

Session 3: Wanting to Quit

This session focuses on motivation and conditioning, and how people can quit smoking. We again revisit nicotine addiction.  We turn to the "Quit Plan" worksheet which will help each member decide on their own quit plan.  This session examines and encourages social support by asking participants to choose a buddy who can help them.  We also examine high-risk situations which related to our triggers in order to better stay clear of future problems.

Session 4: Quit Day

This session is all about quitting.  Up until now each participant has not needed to quit.  The facilitator will assist each participant in making a personal and public commitment to quit smoking. Each participant will sign a contract to stay quit for 48 hours and review their quit plan's triggers. Attention will also be given to exploring symptoms of recovery since our body will have various cravings.

Session 5: Winning Strategies

This session occurs two days after the quit session for a reason.  This session, along with the participants increased desire to use tobacco, is a time to use the help of the group.  Each participant will explore their needs and triggers in real time.  We will discuss any recovery symptoms that are experienced.  While is sounds strange we will also explore the grief process because many participants are losing their best friend.

Session 6: The New You

The new you! The session emphasizes launching a new lifestyle as a nonsmoker.  We will introduce goal setting that reflects weight management issues.  We also examine tips for staying smoke free. Much of our group time is spent hearing the story of each group member and how their story is now changed since quitting.

Session 7: Staying Off

This session includes assertive communication and also focuses on physical activity as an important long-term maintenance techniques.  This session allows each participant use the group to help them stay quit.

Session 8: Celebration

This session is all about celebrating!  The group will take time to reflect upon their experiences of this workshop.  Time is taken to reinforce relapse prevention.  Strategies will be discussed to help participants understand their thoughts about being free from tobacco. Many times this celebration time is spent around food, fun and social support networks.
